Applicants to the ARA Residential Programme will need to fulfil the following criteria:

  • have been abstinent for 5 days at the time of admission and have had prior exposure to primary treatment or a commitment to 12 Step Fellowships;
  • be homeless or in housing need, but not exclusively so;
  • be committed to abstinence from all mood-altering substances;
  • be willing to undertake the abstinence-based Treatment Programme as adopted by ARA and be willing to comply with a Treatment Contract;
  • be aged over 18 years;
  • be able to manage basic household tasks; & have secured (or likely to secure) funding for treatment costs from a statutory provider - ie Social Services, Probation, etc.

Although ARA does not operate a 'points system', applicants will be prioritised on the following basis:

  • commitment to participating in ARA's Treatment Programme;
    local residency;

  • ARA's ability to meet the needs of the applicant; & level of housing need.

How To Apply

By completing an Application Form, Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form (both for completion by the client) and Referral Form (for completion by a referee).

Completed forms are to be returned to:

Senior Counsellor (Residential Programme)
ARA
Kings Court

King Street
Bristol BS1 4EE

Clients enquiring about a vacancy prior to completing an application form, may be asked for certain details (date of birth, ethnic origin, sex and disability status) in order to help ARA with equal opportunities monitoring. Individuals have the right not to give ARA this information but any information that is given will be kept confidential.

Application

All applications will be acknowledged and subsequently assessed against ARA's selection criteria. An ARA counsellor will contact the client - or a client's counsellor/doctor/referee if appropriate - and advise about progress. In the event that ARA is unable to proceed with an application, clients will be informed as to the reason.

If ARA is able to continue with the application and a suitable vacancy occurs, an assessment date will be offered within 2 weeks.

Note: Confirmation of funding will be sought by ARA prior to the assessment date being made.

If no suitable vacancy occurs, applications will remain on a waiting list until an appropriate time. Once on the waiting list, it is important for clients to telephone the Senior Counsellor every 2 weeks to confirm an interest in a vacancy. If there is no regular client contact, ARA reserves the right to remove a name from the waiting list. Alternatively ARA may refer the client to another agency.

Assessment

When a vacancy is expected, ARA will invite the client for an assessment. This procedure consists of 3 parts:

  • first of all an interview lasting approximately 45 minutes with an ARA counsellor at the office in central Bristol;
  • following this will be a housing and support needs assessment with ARA's Housing Officer in order to address housing needs and background, benefit entitlement and other housing management matters.
  • finally the client will stay overnight at the ARA house, meeting with the other residents and looking at the accommodation.
  • This process is designed to help both the client and ARA reach an informed decision.

Post Assessment

All parties will be informed of the outcome of an assessment visit within 2 working days. Unsuccessful applicants will always be given reasons for any decision. A moving in date will de decided upon with successful applicants and this will usually be on a Monday. All offers will be subject to confirmation of funding availability.

Appeals

If clients disagree with a decision, there is the right to appeal. This should be done in writing to the Chief Executive within 7 days of being notified of any decision. It should clearly state why it was felt the decision was wrong. The appeal will be considered within 5 working days and all parties will be informed in writing of the outcome.
